8th Grade Physical Science

2010/2011

I would like to welcome you and your child to the 2010-2011 school year!  I hope that your child has enjoyed their time off, is well rested, and ready to begin an exciting school year.  My name is Mrs. Freeman, and I will be your child’s science teacher.  As the school year begins, I want to communicate to you the expectations and requirements of our science class. Please sign the attached slip after reviewing the information below and return it to school.

Class Description

In this class we will study Physical Science to learn about the “how” and “why” of the world around us. We will learn about motion and forces, structure of matter, chemistry of life, and astronomy throughout the year. Science is learned through investigation and as scientists in this class we will perform experiments and hands-on activities to help promote curiosity and learning. However, these activities are a privilege and must be earned by completing other necessary assignments first.  All curriculums at Peary Middle School are based on California State Standards. For more information regarding the standards, please visit http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/sciencestnd.pdf.

Homework

In this class we will have homework every Monday and Wednesday.  In some instances, students may have homework on additional nights if there is a project to finish, or if students need to study for a test.

On a personal note…

Welcome to a fun and educational year in 8th grade physical science!  In order to help your child succeed to their fullest potential, I am always available to help.  I am eager to meet with parents at school or talk with them over the phone.  You can email me if you would like to set up a meeting or talk. I genuinely have concern for my students, and I am pleased to have your child in my class. I love to teach, and I hope to help inspire Peary Middle School students as part of the next wave of American scientists.

Your child will be learning many new terms and concepts this year in physical science. So if extra assistance is needed to master the content, please encourage your child to ask me for help. I have an 'open door' policy and welcome any questions or comments that will help your child succeed in my class. If you ever have any concerns, please email me or leave a message with the front office with your best times to be reached. Communication is the key to success!

All the best,
