8th Grade Science Syllabus Peary Middle School Mrs. Ofiabulu 2010 - 2011 Parents/Guardian,
I would like to do everything possible to facilitate a successful school experience for your son/daughter. The following is provided so that we can work in partnership to ensure your child’s success.
Objective: The 8th grade science curriculum uses Physical Science topics as a focus for students to learn the process skills, content, and concepts that have been identified as important for upper middle school students. Each students will participate in hands–on experiments and projects, as well have opportunities for group and individual discovery activities. The exploratory learning method will be combined with the integration of technology, math, real world applications, and applications, and writing, and will provide a solid foundation for school science
Science Process Skills Each student will develop the following process skills identified by the California And National Science Education Standards as essential for the middle school science students: Observing Predicting Inferring Communicating Classifying Investigating Measuring Making Models Defining Operationally
Content and Concepts Fundamental Science Skills Chemistry Laboratory safety Physical and Chemical Changes Designing a valid scientific investigation Matter and the Atomic Structure Measurement Elements and Compounds Astronomy- Physics Earth, Moon, Sun Forces and motion Solar System Forces in fluids Stars and Galaxies
Classroom Rules • Follow directions * Respect classmates, teacher, self and classroom • Be in your assigned seat and environment be ready to begin right away * No throwing of things- papers, pen or pencils • No chewing gum, food, candy in class Homework / Class work Late work is only accepted in the case of an excused absence. Here are some suggestions to help you: • Check the Peary website (http://www.pearyms.org/) for Homework Assignments. You will need to select the teacher (Mrs. Ofiabulu) and class period. • Ask a friend for missed worked work and notes • Check with me before or after school if you have any problems or questions. • You have 2 days to make up missed tests or quizzes (excused absence only) • You have one day for every day absent to make other work (excused absence only) Projects are due on the due date whether you are absent or not Quizzes and Tests: Are administered at the end of each chapter or unit to ensure and assess students understanding • Discipline Procedures: *If a minor discipline issue occurs, I will speak to student about it and this is considered a warning * Second discipline issue, parents may receive a call or unsatisfactory notice * After school detention Consequences • Referral to dean’s office or counselor • Request for parent conference • Severe behavior problems will result in immediate removal from class and parent contact. Labs Laboratory safety is very important. Everyone must follow the specific guidelines for labs. Anyone not following the guidelines or not behaving in a safe manner will be removed from the lab and receive a “ 0”. Severe cases may result in the removal of the student from all laboratories and written assignments will substitute for labs. There are no make-ups for missed labs due to excused absences; however, the student may complete a teacher approved article review in lieu of a lab. Notebook Each student is required to maintain a neat and organized notebook, where most of the assignments on reading, demonstrations/labs, lecture notes; class problems, etc are done. Materials * Glencoe: Focus on Physical Science textbook and workbook * Notebook and pencil Science Grading Policy Grades are reported to students using rubrics and letter grades A (Excellent) = (90 – 100%) B (Good) = (80 – 89%) C (Average) = (70 -79%) D (Below Grade Level Expectations) = (50-69%) F (Failing) = below 50%

I agree to follow all of Mrs. Ofiabulu’s class rules. I also understand that I am responsible to obey all of the Peary Middle School Rules. I agree to follow any and all class procedures in Mrs. Ofiabulu’s classroom. By following these rules and procedures, I am ensuring an opportunity to learn for my fellow classmates and myself.
